There are nine main types of font styles: serif, sans-serif, slab serif, script, handwritten, display, blackletter, monospace, and decorative. Each has a shape you can spot in a second once you know what to look for, and each suits different jobs, from a wedding card to a YouTube thumbnail.
This guide explains all nine in plain words, with English and Hindi examples, and shows the copy-paste text style that matches each one on our name font style generator.
What does “font style” mean?
“Font style” is used in two ways. In design, it means the type of lettering, such as serif or script. In apps like Word or in website code, it means only the slant: normal, italic or oblique. Thickness is a separate setting called weight, such as regular or bold.
| Term | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Typeface or font family | The whole design | Arial, Times New Roman, Mukta |
| Font | One version of that design | Arial Bold, Times New Roman Italic |
| Font style (in apps and code) | The slant only | Normal, italic, oblique |
| Font weight | The thickness | Light, regular, bold, black |
| Type of font style (in design) | The category of the design | Serif, sans-serif, script |
So when someone asks for a “stylish font style for my name”, they usually mean the design category. That is what the rest of this guide covers.

What is a serif font?
A serif font has small strokes, called serifs, at the ends of letters. They give text a classic, trustworthy feel, which is why newspapers, books and formal documents use them. Times New Roman and Georgia are the best-known examples (Wikipedia).
Use serif fonts for certificates, invitations with a traditional feel, and long printed text. In Hindi, Martel and Tiro Devanagari Hindi give the same classic look.
What is a sans-serif font?
A sans-serif font has no serifs, so every stroke ends cleanly. “Sans” means “without” in French. These fonts look modern and stay clear on phone screens, which is why most apps and websites use them.
Choose sans-serif for social media posts, school projects and anything read on a phone. Mukta and Noto Sans Devanagari are the Hindi equivalents.
What is a slab serif font?
A slab serif is a serif font with thick, rectangular serifs. It feels strong and confident, and it is common on posters, sports shirts and old western signs. Rockwell is a classic example. Use it for short, bold headings rather than paragraphs.
What is a script font?
A script font imitates formal, joined-up handwriting made with a pen or brush. It feels elegant and personal, so it is the top choice for wedding cards, couple names and quotes. Keep script fonts short and large; a whole paragraph in script is hard to read.
In copy-paste text, Bold Script (𝓝𝓪𝓶𝓮) is the most popular style for names because it looks like a script font but stays readable.
What is a handwritten font?
A handwritten font looks like casual, everyday handwriting rather than formal calligraphy. It feels friendly and relaxed, which suits notes, school content, food posts and kids’ designs. Kalam is a well-loved handwritten font that supports both Hindi and English.
What is a display font?
A display font is designed to be seen big: headlines, posters, logos and thumbnails. Display fonts trade easy reading at small sizes for strong personality at large sizes. Never use them for body text.
For YouTube thumbnails and festival posters, display fonts such as Rozha One, Modak and Yatra One stay readable even when the image is tiny. See our tested list of the best Hindi fonts for more.
What is a blackletter font?
Blackletter, also called Gothic or Old English, is the sharp, dense style used in medieval European books. Today it appears on certificates, newspaper mastheads, tattoos and gaming names because it looks bold and dramatic.
The copy-paste style Gothic (𝔑𝔞𝔪𝔢) and Bold Gothic (𝕹𝖆𝖒𝖊) recreate this look in apps that do not let you change fonts.
What is a monospace font?
In a monospace font every letter takes the same width, so “i” and “m” use equal space. It looks like an old typewriter or computer code. Programmers use it for code; designers use it for a retro or techy feel. The copy-paste Typewriter style (𝙽𝚊𝚖𝚎) gives the same look.
What is a decorative font?
Decorative fonts add shapes or ornaments to letters, such as circles, outlines or flowers. They are fun for stickers, kids’ content and gaming names, but hard to read in long text. In copy-paste styles, Bubble (Ⓝⓐⓜⓔ) and Square (🄽🄰🄼🄴) are the decorative favourites.
Which type of font style should I use?
Match the font to where people will see it and how much they need to read.
| Use | Best type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram or WhatsApp name | Script or sans-serif | Stylish but still readable in small text |
| Wedding card | Script for names, serif for details | Elegant names, easy-to-read details |
| YouTube thumbnail or poster | Display | Readable when the image is small |
| School project or document | Sans-serif or serif | Easy to read in paragraphs |
| Gaming name | Blackletter, display or decorative | Bold and dramatic in short names |
| Logo | Sans-serif or display | Clear at any size |
A simple rule that works: use no more than two types in one design, one with personality for the title and one clean type for everything else.
Can I use these font styles on Instagram and WhatsApp?
Not as real fonts, because those apps do not let you change the font. You can use copy-paste text styles instead, which imitate these types with Unicode characters. Type your name on the name font style generator to see it in 170 styles, or look up any style by name in our font names list.
